If you or a loved one are suffering from addiction, you've probably wondered if addiction can be cured. Like any other chronic disease (asthma or heart disease, for example), there is no cure for addiction. However, addiction can be successfully managed with proper treatment just like most other chronic diseases.

Treatment Options for Addiction

Addiction is treatable. There are many treatment options available to help you or your loved one stop abusing drugs or alcohol and resume productive lives.

  • Rehabilitation Facilities – Both inpatient and outpatient treatment programs exist to help you or your loved one get the level of care needed to successfully treat addiction.
  • Therapy – Whether you seek cognitive behavioral therapy, family therapy, group counseling sessions, or some other form of therapy, speaking with a therapist is an important part of recovery to help you learn about addiction and how to prevent relapses.
  • Medication – Medication cannot cure addiction, but certain medications can help to ease withdrawal symptoms. Talk with your healthcare provider to see which might work for you.
  • Lifestyle Changes – Returning home from rehab can be difficult for many addicts. Make lifestyle changes to ensure treatment lasts. Continue going to meetings, look into new hobbies, revisit the hobbies you enjoyed before addiction, etc.
  • Support – Recovery takes time and effort, and no one can do it alone. Build a support system around you, make amends with friends and family, and make new friends.

While there is to one-stop solution for addiction recovery, there are steps you can take to help yourself or a loved on the road to recovery.
